Two of the most popular hair extension methods in the UK are tape-ins and nano rings. Both give you more length and more volume, but they get there in very different ways. Here’s a straight comparison to help you pick the right one for your hair.
How they’re fitted
Tape extensions use small, pre-taped wefts of hair that are sandwiched either side of a thin section of your natural hair. Fitting a full head typically takes 60–120 minutes.
Nano rings attach individual strands of hair using tiny silicone-lined rings. There’s no heat, glue or chemicals. Each strand is threaded and crimped onto your own hair, so a full head usually takes 2–4 hours.
Best for which hair type?
- Fine hair: tape-ins or nano rings, both sit flat and avoid adding bulk.
- Medium to thick hair: nano rings blend seamlessly and take heavy sections well.
- Hair prone to tangling: nano rings, because there’s no adhesive that can stick in matted hair.
- Short timeframe: tape-ins win on speed of fitting.
Longevity and maintenance
Tape extensions are repositioned every 6–8 weeks. The hair itself can be reused for 6–12 months. Nano rings are repositioned every 8–10 weeks and the hair typically lasts 9–12+ months with good care.
Damage risk
When fitted correctly by a qualified technician, both methods are safe. Tapes rely on adhesive, which can occasionally grab thinner hair during removal. Nano rings place mechanical tension on each strand, so they need careful spacing and sizing. At our Stevenage studio Amy is fully qualified in both, and will recommend whichever is actually best for your hair, not whichever pays more.
Cost
Initial fitting starts from £70 regardless of method. Because all hair is supplied at trade price, the difference in cost mostly comes down to how many grams of hair your head needs, not the method itself.
The honest answer
There’s no universally better method. The right choice depends on your hair type, lifestyle and how much time you want to spend on maintenance. Book a free consultation and we’ll give you a clear written recommendation before you commit.
