Spent real money on great extensions? Good aftercare protects that investment. Here’s the exact routine we recommend at our Stevenage home studio. Simple enough to stick to, rigorous enough to work.
Brushing
- Use a soft-bristle extension brush (never a cheap round brush)
- Brush twice a day: morning and evening
- Hold sections near the root and brush the ends first, working upwards
- Never brush hair when wet: pat dry first and detangle with a wide-tooth comb
Washing
- Wash 2–3 times a week maximum
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo and a hydrating conditioner (avoid the roots)
- Rinse with lukewarm water: hot water loosens tape adhesive and rings
- Pat dry with a microfibre towel, never wring
Heat styling
Always use a heat protectant. Keep styling tools below 180°C. Avoid direct contact between the iron and the attachment point (tape, ring, weft track): concentrated heat degrades both adhesive and the extension bond.
Sleeping
- Always sleep with hair fully dry
- Braid in a loose plait, or tie in a low, loose ponytail
- Silk or satin pillowcases reduce friction and tangling
What to avoid
- Purple shampoos at the root: can dry out and discolour extensions
- Products containing alcohol, parabens or silicone
- Salt water and chlorine (tie hair up and rinse immediately if unavoidable)
- Cheap, matted hair bands that pull strands
